Hunting in Maine

My one and only Maine moose hunting experience happened when my father submitted my name in the lottery for a moose permit when I was 13 years old. Of course, our designated territory was all the way up north near Fort Kent, so an 8 hour drive later, we rented a hunting cabin on Portage lake, where we had to take a boat to get to it.

Other than that, deer hunting in Maine was always more accessible  – if you lived in a rural area, like we did, you could practically shoot a buck from your back porch. Or like our many family and friends, also have a hunting camp or cabin in the north Maine woods near Jackman, Eustis, the Forks or Kingfield.

There are many hunting lodges and hunting camp and cabin rentals available in these areas if you live in southern Maine (or obtain a non-resident hunting license) and just need lodging for a hunting weekend or weeklong trip.
