Skiing in Maine

Growing up in Maine, I did a lot of skiing, because it just was so accessible and cheap, and the state has turned out a fair share of skiing / snowboarding Olympians, too!

The big ski resorts in Maine:

Sunday River – 8 peaks of interconnected high-speed quads, tight tree skiing and wide open groomers and mega moguls. Oh White Heat, how I miss you so!

Sugarloaf - the beast of the east! Gotta love the Snowfields, and the annual Reggaefest spring celebration.

Believe it or not, I actually had to cross country ski UP Sugarloaf one time for a cross country ski race, because there was no snow anywhere else to hold it. okay, it was just the Birches Slope, so it might seem mellow, but screaming down that groomer on skinny cross country skis was pretty insane!

Saddleback – I haven’t been there since new owners took over the mountain and started building up the base areas and expanding ski terrain, but I’ve heard so many good things about skiing there of late.

My favorite local ski areas in Maine:

Shawnee Peakwhere I spent most of my nights skiing after school.

Cross Country Skiing in Maine

Pineland Farms – the Libra foundation has done such a great job over the last decade restoring this beautiful site in New Gloucester, Maine, it’s now one of my favorite places to hang out when I’m back there. In winter, when there’s good snow at least -  the miles and miles of groomed classical and skate skiing trails are smooth and fast, with plenty of rolling hills to get a a great workout. The fresh market at Pineland Farms is a great place to get artisan cheeses made at the creamery on property, and fuel up with a sandwich and soup.  In summer, the trails are open for hiking!

Carter’s XC Centers, Oxford & Bethel Maine – love, love, love the Carter family! Amazing trails, great grooming and friendly faces always.

Black Mountain, Rumford Maine – Site of many high school championship nordic skiing races, as well as junior olympic events, national and international nordic skiing competitions. There’s a challenging hill climb so infamous there, even a Facebook group, I Survived High School Hill!!
